Sony Ericsson invites for MWC 2011 ask you to “Meet the new members of the Xperia family”

January 26, 2011 Leave a comment

The Mobile World Congress is taking place next month in Barcelona, Spain. A lot of companies use this as a time to showcase their next wave of devices to come out in the following year, much like CES (except it’s global). Sony’s mobile department, Sony Ericsson, will be making an appearance and as the invite above states, showing you “the new members of the Xperia family.” The Xperia family already includes the Xperia X10, X10 Mini, Mini Pro X10 and the X8. It is predicted that the new children will include the famously mysterious Xperia Play/Zeus Z1/Playstation Phone as well as a slew of probable WP7 handhelds.

Dell press release squeezed in between HP/Palm and Sprint

January 19, 2011 Leave a comment

Uh oh, looks as if Dell wants a piece of the press event pie that seems to be growing exponentially. Unfortunately for them, they don’t have a master illusionist, nor do they have tasty cocktails or a possible dual-screen 3D Android tablet. However, “Dell Means Business,” so I’m thinking that it will be a heftier, more powerful line of PCs for the working businessman. Possibly an even more enterprise-friendly tablet series? It seems a bit dull, and the timing is slightly awkward (Sprint on the 7th, HP/Palm on the 9th), but I hope, for their sake, they impress.

Sprint feels they need big press release to compete with Verizon

January 13, 2011 Leave a comment

Well in the wake of Verizon’s explosive event that marked the dreams-do-come-true calendar of all Apple fanboys enslaved by that big red checkmark, Sprint decided they had something they needed to say as well. Popular tech blogs SlashGear and Engadget both received the invitation pictured above promising “yet another industry first.” Personally, I’d check it out because they are providing dinner and a show… in addition to the inevitable press release. I mean, really? Master illusionist David Blaine plus “irresistible culinary creations and cocktails?” Sounds like one hell of a party. So eat that Verizon! You can take your CDMA iPhone and ram it up your rear! Don’t get your hopes up that Apple will once again be taking center stage, it is very unlikely that Sprint would toss out their own iteration of the iPhone simply for appeasement. They need to one-up everyone else. It is for “yet another industry first,” and not “the industry’s third.”

Verizon to get iPhone… maybe?

January 8, 2011 Leave a comment

It has finally happened… or has it? According the a very legitimate source, The Wall Street Journal, the iPhone for Verizon is going to be announced this coming Tuesday, January 11. The reports have every single attendee at this year’s CES conference buzzing with hype and speculation because all in all… they don’t know for sure. In the article that tech journalists Shayndi Raice and Yukari Iwatani Kan of WSJ outed Verizon’s motive for their rash press event scheduled this Tuesday, they begin the article with this bold statement:

The iPhone is finally coming to Verizon Wireless.

And continued to state that a person “familiar with the matter” said on Friday that Verizon would be making this big announcement at an event in New York City. These same anonymous people stated that the Verizon version of the phone will be very similar except that it will run on their CDMA network and that Verizon has been testing and preparing for the release of the iPhone for the last few months in order to avoid the nightmare that plagued AT&T after its initial release.

However. The invitation that Verizon sent out never once mentioned Apple. It read:

Join us as we share the latest news.

And that was that. The subject of the matter was not specified and the group of people invited is slightly puzzling. A bit sketch, if you will. MG Siegler over at TechCrunch analyzed his invitation and came up with the following questions:

But that’s the other thing. Would it be Verizon and not Apple running such a high-profile show? And would they do it in New York City instead of near Apple’s home base in Silicon Valley? Certainly someone from Apple would have to be there — and you’d think it would be Steve Jobs. But there’s no mention of Apple at all on the invite. So what is Verizon inviting me to exactly? Is it some silly USB card or the iPhone 4 on Verizon? I don’t know. But color me intrigued.

He also investigated a little and discovered that Jim Dalrymple of The Loop (which exclusively covers Apple) got the green light to attend the event but Gizmodo, which is known for the iPhone 4 prototype fame (and a known buddy to Verizon), did NOT get an invite. Siegler himself should not have been receiving an event invitation from Verizon normally, that normally woud have been addressed to MobileCrunch but he is a well-known Apple fanboy. So all in all, who knows. Considering that the Wall Street Journal was the initial source to leak the story, I’d say that they have some pretty damn reliable people “familiar with the matter.” So the world will probably hear the release of the iPhone for Verizon on January 11, but then again, who knows. Only time will tell.

HP announces webOS press release

January 4, 2011 Leave a comment

Engadget just received an invitation via email to an HP press release in San Francisco on February 9th. Speculation concludes that it must be to announce “the world’s smallest smartphone” that they have said to have been in the works, their new tablet (the fabled PalmPad?) – a successor to the HP Slate that some may say never existed, as well as to discuss the future of webOS. Engadget points out that the word “Palm” wasn’t mentioned anywhere. Hmmm… I guess the world will know on February 9th.
