Sony Ericsson invites for MWC 2011 ask you to “Meet the new members of the Xperia family”

The Mobile World Congress is taking place next month in Barcelona, Spain. A lot of companies use this as a time to showcase their next wave of devices to come out in the following year, much like CES (except it’s global). Sony’s mobile department, Sony Ericsson, will be making an appearance and as the invite above states, showing you “the new members of the Xperia family.” The Xperia family already includes the Xperia X10, X10 Mini, Mini Pro X10 and the X8. It is predicted that the new children will include the famously mysterious Xperia Play/Zeus Z1/Playstation Phone as well as a slew of probable WP7 handhelds.

Playstation Phone gets in-depth leak from Chinese website IT168

There was a new chapter in the Playstation Phone legacy unveiled yesterday. Just a few days ago, I updated the original Playstation Phone article here with very clear photos that appeared on a Hong Kong forum that showed the Xperia and Playstation logos on the device. Now, the Chinese website IT168 has released a very in-depth leak on the Playstation Phone (that Sony has still yet to “announce”).

The battery has a large 1,500 mAh capacity, the 4-inch screen has a 854×480 resolution and the 5MP camera has auto-focus and an LED flash with 720p (and potentially 1080p) video recording. It has 512MB RAM, 512MB ROM, a microSD slot, SIM slot, micro-USB, and a second mic on the back for active noise cancellation like the Nexus One. The Xperia-branded device is in fact powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and the Playstation app now has a name… Playstation Pocket. Although the program now has a name, there still have been no games loaded so the decision is out on whether it will be able to play PSOne games, PSP games or new games altogether. Details show that the Playstation Phone will in fact be a more powerful big brother to the PSP Go given that the specs on the Go are considerably weaker – a 333MHz processor, 64MB RAM and a 3.8″ 480×272 screen.

UPDATE 1/10

Footage has been uncovered on the web, and consequently posted on YouTube that shows the Xperia Play/Zeus Z1 actually being used to play PSOne games. The gamer in the video uses a program called Rom Buddy to launch Rage Racer and Biohazard 2. More than likely this is a homebrew application and simple ROMS downloaded from the internet but it is the first footage of Playstation games legitimately being used as a gaming device.
